Organic Cotton 101

September 15, 2015

Let's Start From The Very Beginning

In addition to being one of the most widely grown crops in the world, growing Conventional Cotton is also one of the most Chemical-Intensive. These chemicals have tremendous negative impact on the earth’s air, water, soil, and the health of people in cotton-growing areas. They are among the most toxic chemicals as classified by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The problem is even worse in developing countries with uninformed consumers, and lack of stable institutions. In addition to destroying the land, thousands of farmers die from exposure to these chemicals every year.

Once we came to know this and other surprising and scary facts we had to do something about this. In our quest to find a way to make our clothes without leaving a negative environmental and health impact we discovered Organic Cotton.

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic Cotton in layman’s term is Good Cotton. It is grown using materials & methods that have low or zero negative impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic pesticides & fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. In addition, regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming.

All cotton sold as organic must meet strict regulations covering how the cotton is grown.

You must be thinking how does one cultivate a crop without using strong insecticides & pesticides? Well it’s possible but it requires hard labor and good planning. To grow Organic Cotton, natural manures & other environmental methods such as crop rotation amongst others are used.

Now since Organic Cotton is free from toxic chemicals. This is not only healthy for the planet but also for you. You skin is free from harmful chemicals, which eventually would have come in contact with you if you would have worn garments made form conventional cotton.

Well our Organic Cotton 101 doesn’t stop here….next week we’ll be telling you more about the process and strict regulations that make Organic Cotton, Organic. Also we will show you how rare and premium this is.
